La société anonyme à but non lucratif Grantecan a été créée en 1994 par le gouvernement régional des îles Canaries pour superviser les études de faisabilité du télescope Grantecan, puis sa construction et son exploitation. L’instrument devrait être opérationnel d’ici fin 2006. Au départ, il appartenait à parts égales à la région des Canaries et à l’État espagnol, mais 10 % de son financement est maintenant d’origine étrangère.
