A formula for the future

During the past year, Evolution has focused on issues that are crucial to the growth of industrial companies in highly competitive markets.

We have written about the need for differentiation – for products that offer something beyond their basic function. An example from the world of SKF is ICOS™. This is a bearing with an integrated seal, offering smaller dimensions than a regular assembly where the bearing and the seal are separate units. That gives SKF a competitive edge when size requirements are paramount.

Evolution has also covered the benefits of industrial partnerships and the need to act decisively in emerging markets and within emerging technologies. Both alternatives offer opportunities for growth that will benefit agile companies, leaving the hesitant behind. Given its many partnerships and its activities in emerging markets and technologies, I think SKF is strong in that respect – driving development instead of merely following it.

The topic for this issue of the magazine will be the last in this year’s series focusing on growth-crucial factors. It’s about Value Added Services. The subtitle of the Outlook article that analyzes this business says it all: “Where the new profits lie.”

When SKF offers, in addition to its products, its know-how in the form of services, then one plus one equals three. Why? Because it creates added value for the customer as well as for the supplier. Profits can be reaped at both ends. As the article explains, this is a successful formula for the future.

Speaking of the future, I hope you will continue looking for Evolution in your mail. The first issue of 2001 has the working title “Safety” and I’m very excited about what stories we will find in that important area.

Meanwhile, I hope you will enjoy the issue that you are holding in your hands. Don’t miss “A heavenly view” about a telescope that can show stars being born. And find out more about Indica,
an Indian car that may soon be on the roads of Europe.
