Courses in bearing maintenance
SKF’s Bearing Maintenance Institute, now in its 20th year, is the most comprehensive bearing maintenance training course in the industry, and regularly hosts full-capacity audiences. Engineers, technicians, managers and others wishing to attend are advised to call for reservations at least two weeks in advance. Dates and locations appear below.
BMI is recommended for all persons with bearing maintenance responsibilities, especially those from industrial plants, public utilities and commercial buildings.
The three-day seminar covers virtually every major topic associated with the care and handling of bearings. Attendees learn the fundamentals of rolling bearing technology, bearing selection and loading, nomenclature, lubrication and measuring and fitting procedures for shafts and housings. They also gain a basic understanding of why bearings fail. Attendees are encouraged to bring with them specific bearing failure problems they’ve experienced at their facilities. BMI instructors will explain how to identify and interpret the cause of the bearing failures so that users can prevent them from happening again.
Underlying much of the seminar’s work are innovative SKF maintenance concepts that are gaining acceptance throughout the industry as preferred methods for reducing equipment downtime due to bearing failure and increasing productivity. BMI also addresses both the Trouble-Free OperationTprogram and Shaft System Management with a combination of lectures and hands-on practice with bearing installation and maintenance tools and instruments that gauge component health.
Attendees successfully completing the course earn 1.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). All attendees are issued comprehensive literature for use during the seminar as technical references on the job. They include the SKF General Catalog, which contains specifications on more than 25,000 bearing products and accessories and the SKF Bearing Maintenance Handbook, which is a practical working guide for maintenance professionals.
Classes are limited to 30 students. For more information about the Bearing Maintenance Institute, please call

SKF Bearing Maintenance Institute course descriptions
Industrial Bearing
Maintenance and Service
The industry’s first program for maximizing bearing service life. You will learn the latest bearing maintenance techniques which will help you reduce costly downtime and lower total bearing costs. Topics include: rolling bearing basics, mounting and dismounting, shaft and housing fits, bearing care, fundamentals of lubrication and an overview of applications for various types of bearings and industries.
Continuous Caster
This application-specific course is designed to increase equipment reliability and mill productivity. The course begins with an overview of bearing functions and goes on to cover: designs and arrangements, ladle turrets, slewing rings, segment rolls and rollout, and transfer tables. Also included are hands-on practices, demonstrations, bearing rework processes, and failure analysis.
Centrifugal Pumps
This course is intended to provide a clear understanding of the design, installation and maintenance of centrifugal pumps. The course begins with an overview of the theory of centrifugal pumping, pump curves, and fluid behavior within the pump. The course also covers bearing selection, internal clearances, shaft and housing fits, and lubrication. Seal design and selection
complete the course material. Included throughout are discussions on foundation preparation, start-up procedures, and precision maintenance techniques. All these elements add up to maximum performance.
Reliability Through Bearing Failure Analysis
Many bearings fail to achieve their calculated rating life which causes unplanned and unnecessary downtime. The first step to eliminating premature bearing failures is to determine what caused the bearing to fail. The bearing
is the heart of the machine
and is subject to the various stresses and strains within the machine, thereby becoming an equipment sensor. Diagnosis of failed bearings can provide the evidence necessary
to determine the root cause of the failure.
Machine Tool Reliability
Enhance the reliability and productivity of your plant by addressing problems associated with precision bearings and machine tool spindles. In this course, plant personnel will learn about precision bearings, terminology, nomenclature, care and handling, mounting and dismounting, lubrication, and rebuilding. Application criteria such as accuracy, speed, preload and stiffness are covered.
A hands-on session covering spindle rebuilding is designed to help you reduce maintenance costs associated with mishandling of precision bearings.
Highlights
During the course of the
BMI seminar you will:
- Learn the fundamentals of rolling bearing technology, care, nomenclature, bearing components, loads and lubrication, and gain a basic understanding of why bearings fail.
- Study proper bearing mounting and dismounting procedures, and observe what
happens as a result of careless handling, neglected maintenance and poor lubrication. - Participate in small-group hands-on demonstrations, using specialized tools to
correctly mount and dismount ball and roller bearings. (Mounting/dismounting tools include the hydraulic nut, oil injection equipment, bearing heating devices.) - See how important it is to select the proper lubricant for an application and learn to maximize bearing life through an improved understanding of proper lubrication principles and functions.
- Identify and interpret actual bearing failures so you can prevent them from happening again. (Be sure to bring along your specific failure problems for review.)
- Practice using a sine bar to check the taper conformity
and size of a tapered journal. - Learn about seals and their functions.
- Review with your classmates some successful industrial bearing applications that may be adaptable to your company’s operations.
