Continuous casting company Sidmar N.V. of Belgium has eliminated unplanned downtime caused by bearing failures. This was accomplished by installing CARBTM on the non-locating side of continuous casting machines, where bearing loads can reach 30 tonnes.
The company discovered that bearing failures resulting from excessive thrust loads caused by axial displacements could be avoided by replacing the existing spherical roller bearings with CARBTM . Because it can accommodate axial expansion, CARBTM effectively doubles the bearings’ service life. The 40 bearings now in use at Sidmar have also improved the service life of existing spherical roller bearings, since they are no longer subjected to such high axial loads.
