The 1997 Tribology Gold Medal has been awarded to Bo Jacobson, professor of machine elements at Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden. Jacobson was formerly with the SKF Engineering & Research Centre (ERC) in the Netherlands.
The Tribology Gold Medal is awarded annually by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London and has been presented to researchers in the field for 26 years.
Tribology is the study of friction between interacting parts, such as gears, and ways of reducing it.
Jacobson was presented his award by the British ambassador to Sweden, Roger B. Bone, and Princess Lilian of Sweden.
