Big vision engineering

Several examples of visionary thinking and knowledge engineering – demonstrating real solutions for real conditions in steel making and construction – were introduced by SKF in April at the 2003 Hanover Fair in Germany.

The first of the SKF designed and manufactured innovations was the SKF ConRo, which is a fully sealed lubrication-free roll unit developed for use in continuous casting machines.

The ConRo is designed to operate without grease re-lubrication in the extreme conditions of steelmaking.

The working conditions typically include heavy loads, extremely low speeds, very high temperatures, continuous cooling water and a saturated steam atmosphere.

Among the proven benefits of the SKF ConRo unit are reduced production costs, minimised maintenance, less creation of hazardous waste, simplified water-cleaning systems and minimal production stoppages.

The unit also results in higher product quality and a reduced impact on the environment because it does away with the used grease and the disposal problems it creates.

A new system for monitoring loads and temperatures in continuous casting machines, the SKF ConRo Analyst, can be used in conjunction with the ConRo system (and other systems).

It is a first step towards full-scale monitoring of the casting process, providing information that will allow operators to make in-process adjustments leading to fewer stops and greater productivity.
