Three “environmental ambassadors” have jointly won the 2009 Göteborg Award. The three recipients – Dr Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka, Nairobi, Kenya, Enrique Peñalosa, Bogotá, Colombia, and Søren Hermansen, Samsø, Denmark – will share the award equally.

According to the panel of independent judges, although each recipient comes from a different continent, all are knowledgeable, engaged and impatient doers, both globally and locally. They are environmental ambassadors in one of the most decisive issues facing humanity – the battle for sustainable development in the cities and towns around the world.

The Göteborg Award is an international award that recognizes and supports work to achieve sustainable development in the region and around the world. The award money, 1 million Swedish kronor (100,000 euros), is administrated and funded by a coalition made up of the City of Göteborg, Sweden, and 12 companies, including SKF. 2009 marks the 10th year the award has been given.
