Copperhead is a new integrated system of advanced bearings and condition monitoring technology. Developed by SKF, it is designed specifically for use with vibrating screens and other vibrating equipment in the mining and construction industries.
“With the SKF Copperhead system, customers can electronically integrate condition monitoring into the process control of their operations, with the ultimate goal of minimising unplanned equipment downtime,” says Steve Irvine, director of the SKF Global Mining segment.
The system has three key components: SKF condition monitoring equipment, SKF Explorer bearings for vibrating applications, and optional SKF services.
A choice of two conditioning monitoring units is available. One is the basic BNC monitoring unit, designed to be used in tandem with the portable SKF Microlog for periodic equipment monitoring. The other is the MCM monitoring unit, which provides more advanced continuous monitoring capabilities. The latter can be connected to the programmable logic controller (PLC) or distributed control system (DCS) at a mine or quarry.
The condition monitoring equipment also includes the new SKF Copperhead sensor, an integrated accelerometer and temperature sensor in a rugged, compact housing. It also features a fully integrated cable, which minimises the risk of cable breakage and degradation of the sensor from water or other contaminants.
Among the optional services are installation of the equipment as well as a variety of periodic condition monitoring services. Both the equipment and the services can be purchased or leased from SKF.
