SKF and Knorr-Bremse Systeme für Schienenfahrzeuge GmbH have started a joint project to develop condition monitoring cap-ability for rolling stock that can be integrated into Knorr-Bremse’s brake control systems.

The new monitoring system will add next-generation functionality, enabling the remote monitoring and gathering of data from each bogie system while the train is in full service on the track. As a result, the train operator or the service provider will be able to achieve early detection of problems and defects and thus avoid or reduce secondary damage through component failures. The new system will enable the operator to introduce condition- based maintenance and reduce life-cycle costs.

The monitoring solution from SKF will be based on its world-leading online system for trains, IMx-R. The two companies will jointly develop a specialized electronic monitoring board for integration into the Knorr-Bremse brake control systems that is capable of recording and diagnosing conditional data from railway vehicles.

The Knorr-Bremse Group is a world-leading manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles.
