GKN Automotive International GmbH of Germany and AB SKF have developed a new compact automotive hub and halfshaft assembly.

The Compact HHM (hub halfshaft module) offers considerable weight saving of some 10 percent on conventional hub assemblies, which helps vehicle designers achieve overall weight reduction in new vehicles. It also reduces unsprung mass, contributing significantly to overall ride comfort.

Because it weighs less and is smaller than conventional units, the Compact HHM offers greater flexibility in suspension and steering design. GKN and SKF also foresee the opportunity to simplify the assembly process.

The Compact HHM includes a hub bearing unit, CV (constant velocity) fixed joint, interconnecting shaft and CV plunging joint. It is applicable for front and rear–drive applications and in all–wheel–drive vehicles such as the popular sport utility models.
